Castle Acre Castle

The earthworks here are what grab you first - massive, green, and genuinely imposing even after a thousand years. Castle Acre Castle, just outside Swaffham, is an 11th-century Norman motte-and-bailey fortress, and what remains is substantial enough to make you understand why it mattered. You get the mound, the ditches, fragments of flint walls, and the Bailey Gate - a proper gatehouse that's survived better than most. It's free to wander around, which is brilliant, and you can spend anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour depending on how much you want to poke about in the undergrowth.

Histor fans will want to stay longer. The site tells the story of early Norman power in East Anglia, and the scale of the earthworks shows what resources were poured into defending this spot. Walking the perimeter is straightforward, though it can get muddy after rain and the mound itself is a bit of a huff to climb. Kids generally find it decent - somewhere to run around and burn energy - though it's not packed with interactive stuff. There's no café or facilities, so come prepared.

It works well as part of a wider Castle Acre tour. The village itself has the priory ruins nearby, so you can tie both into an afternoon. If you're staying at Norfolk Woods Resort & Spa or Breckland Meadows Caravan Park, it's close enough for a quick trip without eating into your day. Worth the detour if you're into Norman archaeology, less essential if you're after something more dramatic.
