Castell y Gaer

The crumbling remains of a Roman fort sit on a hillside above Llwyngwril, commanding views across Cardigan Bay. Castell y Gaer - the name means 'fort of the fortress' - is what's left of a second-century military outpost, and honestly, it rewards the scramble up to see it. The earthworks are still substantial enough to read: you can make out the defensive ditches and the basic layout of the fort's interior, though don't expect standing walls or dramatic structures.

Historically minded walkers will find this genuinely interesting. The fort was built around 78 AD as part of Rome's push into Wales, and you're essentially walking through nearly two thousand years of military strategy made visible in the landscape. The views from up there are worth the effort alone - the sort of panorama that makes you understand why the Romans chose this spot.

It's free to visit and you can wander around whenever you like. Allow an hour or so, including the walk up. Kids might lose interest quickly unless they're the type who enjoy a bit of scrambling and imaginative play among ancient earthworks. Families staying at Sunbeach Holiday Park - just 0.4 miles away - could easily pop up here as an afternoon venture, or combine it with a proper walk around the surrounding countryside. Cae Du Campsite, a bit further along at 2.4 miles, is also well placed if you're based locally. The site itself is unmanaged and unfenced, so wear decent shoes and check the weather before you go.
