Carwaur

Carwaur sits at 370 metres in the rolling landscape south of Maybole, offering proper views across South Ayrshire if you can be bothered with the walk up. It's not a dramatic summit - no craggy peaks or dramatic drops - but on a clear day you'll see right across the Lowlands and towards the coast. The terrain is moorland and grassland, fairly open, which means you're exposed to whatever weather's coming in off the sea.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. Not a spot for dawdling or bringing very young kids unless they're competent hillwalkers already. The approach from Maybole side is straightforward enough, but allow a good couple of hours there and back depending on fitness. A local map is useful - there's no visitor infrastructure up here, no café, no facilities. Bring water.

Where Carwaur works well is as part of a longer day out exploring the Lowlands around Maybole rather than an isolated trip. The nearby Freedom Fields Glamping is handy if you want a comfortable base for a few days of low-key hill walking and exploring the farmland and small villages in the area. The views justify the effort, especially in autumn when the light's particularly good, but don't expect anything beyond a straightforward moorland walk with decent vistas. It's worth doing if you're already in South Ayrshire; it's not a reason to travel here on its own.
