Carvers Recreation Ground

The ground slopes gently away from the entrance, revealing what looks like someone's rather large back garden that's been left to its own devices - in the best possible way. Carvers is a nature reserve that feels refreshingly ungoverned, where the woodland and open ground exist on their own terms rather than being manicured into submission.

You'll find yourself walking through mixed woodland with surprisingly open sight lines, spotting wildlife if you're quiet enough and lucky enough. There's a genuine sense of discovery here - no obvious trail markers, just space to explore at your own pace. It's the sort of place where you might stumble upon a clearing and think you've found something no one else has, even though dozens have been there before you.

Walkers get the most from this one, particularly those who prefer a bit of understated independence. Children will find enough to investigate without the structured entertainment of purpose-built attractions. It won't hold anyone's attention for three hours, but an hour or so ambling about feels just right.

The reserve sits just outside Ringwood, making it an easy morning visit if you're staying at Fernwood Glamping nearby - proper glamping, that, with actual comfort - or any of the other holiday parks dotted around. Combine it with a proper walk elsewhere and you've got a solid day of fresh air without overcommitting to any single spot. No entrance fee as far as I can tell, which means you can pop in on a whim.
