Carter's Copse

A proper woodland walk just outside Oxford, Carter's Copse is the sort of place locals know about but tourists miss entirely. The forest floor is thick with moss and fallen leaves, the kind of terrain that feels properly autumnal even when it isn't. You'll find yourself weaving between mature oak and beech trees, with enough cover overhead to make it feel secluded despite being only a few miles from the city.

It's ideal if you want an hour or so away from the crowds without needing to trek halfway across the Cotswolds. The paths wind through the woodland in a fairly straightforward loop, so there's no serious navigation required. Kids won't get restless here if they're the type to collect interesting sticks and hunt for woodland creatures. Dog owners make up a large chunk of visitors, and the ground is soft enough underfoot that it doesn't punish your knees.

The real pull is mood rather than spectacle. There's something about being surrounded by proper forest that makes Oxford's spires and traffic feel very distant. For walkers basing themselves at Lashlake Barn or White Mark Glamping, it's an easy addition to a day out - close enough that you're not burning half the day on the drive. Free to access, no gates or barriers, just turn up when you fancy it. Best on weekday mornings when the parking area is quiet and you've got the place nearly to yourself.
