Castle Hill

Standing at 173 metres above sea level, this modest hill offers surprisingly rewarding views across the Thames Valley without the crowds you'd find at more famous Oxfordshire vantage points. The climb from the village below takes about 20 minutes through open farmland, though the path can get muddy after rain - proper walking boots are a good shout.

Families with older children will manage the ascent easily enough, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections near the top. The real reward comes at the summit where you can see right across to the Chilterns on a clear day, with Oxford's dreaming spires visible to the north.

History buffs will appreciate the Iron Age earthworks scattered across the hillside, though there's not much left to see beyond grassy mounds. It's more about the walk and the views than any dramatic ruins.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, including time to catch your breath at the top. Early morning visits work best - fewer dog walkers and better light for photos. The hill makes a decent afternoon stretch if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Green Acres Holiday Retreat or Cedar Hollow Oxford, though it's hardly worth a special journey unless you're already exploring this corner of Oxfordshire.
