Carter Fold Wood

A proper woodland walk awaits at Carter Fold Wood, just outside Preston - the kind of place you stumble into expecting nothing much and come out feeling you've had a proper day out. It's a working forest rather than a manicured park, with decent woodland trails that wind through mixed trees and occasional clearings where you get a sense of space. The paths are straightforward enough, though muddy in wet weather, so waterproof boots aren't optional.

For families with primary-school-age kids, this works well. They can burn off energy without you having to watch them constantly - the area isn't so vast or remote that you'll worry, but it's big enough to feel like proper exploring. Walkers will find it decent for an hour or ninety minutes, depending on which routes you fancy. Don't expect dramatic vistas or anything Instagram-worthy; this is genuinely local woodland doing its job.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Northwood and Dale Hey Farm are within a couple of miles - it's an obvious spot for a morning or afternoon without needing to load everyone back in the car and drive somewhere showy. Beacon Fell View and the Wigwam sites are slightly further out but still handy. The woodland's free to access and open when you fancy it, though check locally for any seasonal closures or work being done.
