Carshalton Park

The moment you push through the entrance to Carshalton Park, you're met with proper wetland - reedy, boggy, and genuinely wild for somewhere just outside Redhill. This isn't a tidy park with manicured paths. It's a nature reserve where the landscape does what it wants, and that's precisely what makes it worth an afternoon.

The main draw is birdwatching. Depending on the season, you'll spot herons, kingfishers, and all manner of wildfowl picking about in the water. The paths wind through mixed woodland and along the margins of the wetland itself - muddy in winter, muggy in summer. A pair of binoculars and a decent bird book transforms the visit from a pleasant walk into something more engaging. Families with older kids who can cope with boggy ground will find plenty to spot and discuss.

Walkers get a solid hour-and-a-half circuit if they're in no rush. Photography types could stretch that to two hours easily. The reserve isn't massive, so don't expect a full day here, but it pairs nicely with a stay at Alderstead Heath Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - just five-and-a-half miles away - as a morning outing before heading elsewhere.

It's free to access, which is refreshing. Go early in the day when wildlife is most active. The woodland bit can feel a touch gloomy on grey days, but that's when the birdlife is most vocal. Wellies are non-negotiable if there's been rain.
