Carreg-y-Llech Neolythic Monolith

You're standing in front of a 25-tonne slab of stone that's been here since someone dragged it into place around 3500 BC. Carreg-y-Llech is a proper Neolithic monolith in Flintshire, and it's the kind of thing that stops you dead when you realise how old it actually is. No visitor centre, no rope barriers, no gift shop - just you, the stone, and a lot of questions about how Bronze Age people managed this without machinery.

The site itself is straightforward. You'll find the monolith standing upright on open moorland, which gives you a real sense of why someone chose this spot. The views across Flintshire are worth the visit alone. Historians and archaeology buffs will spend a proper amount of time here trying to work out its original purpose - ritual monument, boundary marker, territorial marker - nobody's entirely sure, which is part of the appeal.

It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter rain makes the moorland track decidedly muddy. Allow 30-45 minutes including the walk across the fields. Families with older kids who aren't bored by "just a stone" will find it interesting; younger ones might need a story to keep them engaged.
