Carreg-Wen Fawr

The walk up to Carreg-Wen Fawr takes you through proper moorland, the kind of exposed terrain where the wind doesn't mess about and the views just keep expanding. You're looking at a standalone peak in the Powys hills that feels somehow more dramatic for being fairly modest in height - there's something about its isolation that makes it stand out.

Once you've climbed it, the reward is genuinely good. The summit gives you sweeping sightlines across Mid Wales, and on a clear day you can trace ridges and valleys stretching out in every direction. The rock formations themselves are worth studying too - there's real character to the stone. Most people will want a couple of hours minimum to get up and back down without rushing, depending on your fitness and which approach you take from the Llanwrtyd Wells direction.

This works brilliantly if you're basing yourself at Welsh Glamping for a proper walking holiday. It's the kind of peak that appeals to serious walkers rather than casual strollers - the path can be boggy, navigation matters when the mist comes in, and you need decent boots. Kids aged ten upwards would manage it fine if they're used to hills, but younger ones might find it a slog for views that don't look dramatically different at the top than they do halfway up.

Free to visit, naturally. Best attempted in settled weather when you can actually see what you've climbed for. The isolation is its biggest selling point - you won't be queuing.
