Carreg Cennen Castle

The walk up to Carreg Cennen is the thing. You'll huff and puff climbing the limestone ridge, but once you crest that final slope, the castle suddenly commands the landscape - perched on a crag so dramatically positioned it feels almost theatrical. It's a proper ruin, no reconstruction nonsense, just raw medieval stone tumbling down the hillside with the Black Mountain behind it and the Vale of Towy stretching out below like a green quilt.

You get the gatehouse, a crumbling keep, and ramparts that cling to the rock itself. There's a cave running underneath - you can descend into it if you're not spooked by bats and darkness - which the garrison apparently used as a water source. Medieval paranoia meets practical engineering.

Families with kids aged eight and up will find it genuinely thrilling. Younger children might struggle with the steep approach and the uneven terrain underfoot. Walkers will love it regardless - the ridgeline itself offers cracking views for miles. History types get the castle's edges but honest storytelling: built around 1280, attacked repeatedly, eventually abandoned. No interpretive centre, no gift shop. Just the ruins and the landscape doing the talking.

Allow a good two hours if you're going into the cave and taking time to absorb the views. The walk's not technically difficult, but it is steep - proper calves will notice it. Free to access.
