Carrbridge Studio

Just off the main road between Aviemore and Carrbridge, this working studio feels like stumbling into someone's creative space rather than a formal gallery. The artist's work dominates - sculpture, painting, whatever's on the go that week - and there's genuine interaction with whoever's in. No velvet ropes or fussy opening hours bollocks.

It's worth a stop if you're already heading through the Highlands, though I wouldn't say it's a destination in itself. Kids might find it interesting for twenty minutes or so, especially if there's something tactile on display. History enthusiasts will get more from Fort George or Culloden nearby. The real appeal is catching art in its natural habitat rather than polished up for public consumption.

The proximity to Highland Glen Holiday Park makes it an easy detour during a longer stay in the area. Combine it with a walk round Carrbridge itself - the old stone bridge is worth five minutes - and you've got a decent afternoon. Summer's the safest bet for visiting, when light's good and the artist's more likely to be working. The Aviemore end of things offers proper facilities and decent restaurants if you need them afterwards.

Free admission is typical for artist studios, though do ring ahead - working artists aren't always there on weekends, and there's no point driving out if they're away.
