Carrbridge Parish Church

The small stone church sits quietly on the edge of Carrbridge village, about six miles south of Aviemore, looking like it's been there far longer than you'd expect. Built in 1802, it's a proper example of Highland kirk architecture - whitewashed walls, simple rectangular shape, the kind of place that feels genuinely used rather than preserved behind velvet ropes.

Inside it's just as unpretentious. You get dark wooden pews, a modest pulpit, and that particular smell of old churches everywhere - polish, wood, and time. The real draw isn't the building itself but the fact it sits at the heart of a village that's managed to avoid becoming theme-park Scotland. This is actual community infrastructure, still functioning, still attended.

It's free to visit and takes about fifteen minutes to look round properly. Best time is mid-morning on a weekday when you'll likely have the place to yourself - the light through those small windows is lovely then. Families with older kids won't find it engaging, to be honest. Young children will get restless within five minutes.

What makes it worthwhile is the walk around Carrbridge itself. The village has proper character, and the church grounds are peaceful.
