Carrallack gardens

Three miles inland from Penzance, Carrallack Gardens is a proper working garden that feels nothing like the manicured tourist attraction you might expect. What strikes you first is how personal it all feels - this is clearly someone's home and life's work, not a corporate heritage property.

The gardens spread across several acres of Cornish countryside, with a mix of mature trees, informal planting, and areas that have genuine character. You'll find mature rhododendrons and azaleas doing what they do best in the acidic Cornish soil, alongside perennials that have clearly been let loose to self-seed. There's a stream running through, which adds movement to the place.

It's worth coming if you're into plants - serious gardeners will find plenty to study, and there's none of that clinical tour-guide atmosphere. Families with young children might find it a bit slow, though the woodland paths keep things interesting for a solid hour or so. The lack of crowds is actually its strongest point. You won't feel rushed.
