Carr Wood

Carr Wood sits just outside Lancaster, a proper woodland walk that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's the kind of place where you wander through mixed forest, spot the odd stream, and remember why you quite like trees - without needing dramatic views or a cafe at the end of it.

The woodland itself is nothing fancy. Paths wind through the usual northern mix of oak and birch, muddy in winter, pleasant enough come spring. You'll find it peaceful rather than spectacular, which is exactly the point. It's the sort of walk where families with younger legs won't get restless, and older walkers can potter about without fuss. Allow an hour or so, maybe ninety minutes if you're in no hurry.

What makes Carr Wood worth the detour from Lancaster isn't the woodland itself - there's plenty of forest around Lancashire. Rather, it's the simplicity. No admission fees to worry about, no visitor centre nonsense. Just trees and footpaths. It works well alongside a park holiday at Crook O'Lune, which is barely two miles away - you could combine a morning here with an afternoon by the river and call it a proper day out.

Go when the weather's dry enough. Muddy boots come with the territory in a Lancashire wood, but there's a difference between damp ground and bog. Spring and early autumn are best - the light's decent, and you won't be fighting through August midges. Park near the village if you can find a spot, and don't expect signage.
