Carp Lake

The water at Carp Lake sits still and dark, ringed by trees that slope down to the bank. It's a proper working fishery near Everthorpe, run for anglers who know what they're after, but walkers can circuit it without a rod in hand. The path around the lake takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace, though you won't find tourist infrastructure or a café at the far end.

Truth is, if you're expecting a grand country lake with viewing platforms and interpretive boards, you'll be disappointed. This is a working fishing lake, functional rather than manicured. That said, there's something honest about it. You get birds if you're quiet - herons, the odd cormorant - and the walk is gentle enough for families without wearing everyone down. Children might enjoy spotting fish in the shallows, though they'll lose interest fast if they're after splash and noise.

It works best as a leg-stretch during a caravan holiday in the area. Little Wold Away Glamping and William's Den are both within striking distance, so you could make it part of a morning circuit rather than a destination in itself. Go early if you want to avoid the fishing crowd. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; leave expectations low if you're not.

Everthorpe is close enough that you could combine this with village exploring, but Carp Lake won't anchor a day trip. It's a pleasant detour for people staying nearby who like a quiet walk and don't need much else.
