Carningli South Settlement

The Iron Age settlement on Carningli's southern slopes is one of those walks where the archaeology almost becomes secondary to the view. You're climbing through scrubby heathland towards the Preseli Hills, with Cardigan Bay opening up behind you, and somewhere along the way you start spotting the stone circles and hut foundations that tell you people have been here for nearly 2,500 years.

It's not a manicured site with interpretation boards. You need to know what you're looking at, or bring someone who does. The remains are subtle - circular depressions where roundhouses once stood, banks where defensive walls ran. History types will find it genuinely absorbing; casual walkers might spend twenty minutes wondering if what they're seeing is actually archaeology or just rough ground.

The walk itself is the real draw. Starting from Newport, it's a proper hike up to the settlement - allow a good two hours if you want to properly explore and then reach the summit cairn. Go on a clear day; in cloud, you're just trudging through mist. Free to access, no visitor facilities, so bring water.

Combines decent exercise with genuine historical interest without feeling like you're trudging around a museum car park. Not the thing for young kids who need constant engagement, but walkers who like their countryside with a bit of substance will get plenty from it.
