Carningli Hillfort Upper Platform

The walk up Carningli is steep, no messing about there. But you reach the upper platform and suddenly it clicks - this Iron Age hillfort was a serious piece of defensive architecture. From up here, you can see why the ancients chose this spot. The views across Pembrokeshire are proper outstanding, and on a clear day you're looking out towards the coast with Newport sitting below like a toy town.

What you're standing on are the remains of ramparts and banks - the physical guts of what would have been a settlement, a refuge, a stronghold. There's something about walking these ridges that makes history feel less like dates in a textbook and more like actual lived experience. The upper platform itself isn't dramatic or visibly impressive in the way some hill forts are - this is subtle stuff, requires a bit of imagination.

For walkers, it's the main event. History enthusiasts will spend time reading the landscape, understanding the defences. Kids might find it a bit abstract unless they're already interested in Iron Age Britain - it's not Tintern Abbey with soaring arches to photograph. Allow a couple of hours including the walk up and time to sit about taking it in.

Nearest town is Newport, which is well-placed for exploring the rest of Pembrokeshire's archaeology. If you're camping at Llwyngwair Manor or any of the holiday parks nearby, this is an obvious half-day outing. It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though autumn and spring are best - you won't overheat on the climb and the views are clearer.
