Carningli Hillfort Lower Platform

The walk up Carningli to the lower platform is a proper expedition, rewarding you with one of Pembrokeshire's most commanding views across Newport Bay and the Preseli Mountains beyond. You're walking through remains of an Iron Age hillfort - the lower platform is where you'll see the clearest evidence of ancient earthworks, a series of defensive terraces that still make sense after two millennia.

This isn't a tidy heritage site with interpretation boards. What you get is the raw archaeology: uneven ground, stone outcrops, the ghost of a settlement. It appeals most to walkers with an interest in history rather than families after a quick outing - the scramble up takes proper effort, and there's not much to occupy young kids once you're there.
