Carne Beacon

You won't find crowds or facilities at Carne Beacon - just an Iron Age fort sitting on a headland near Truro with views across Cornwall that frankly justify the walk alone. The earthworks are still clearly visible, those distinctive ditch-and-bank defences that mark out a promontory fort from around 500 BC. It's one of those sites where you genuinely feel the weight of ancient occupation, even if what remains are humps and bumps in the grass rather than dramatic ruins.

The appeal here is straightforward: if you're into prehistoric archaeology and don't mind a bit of rough ground, it's worth the detour. The walk itself is pleasant, and on a clear day the vistas are outstanding. Less interesting if you're after visible structures or family attractions with explanatory panels - there's none of that. It's essentially a field site, and it demands you bring your own imagination.

Allow an hour to scramble around and absorb the setting. There's no admission charge and no facilities, so come properly dressed for moorland weather. It works best as part of a broader archaeological ramble around the Roseland Peninsula rather than a standalone stop.

If you're camping at Veryan or Trethem Mill - both within striking distance - this fits neatly into a morning expedition. The nearest real facilities are back in Truro, so plan accordingly. Winter can be bleak up there, spring and early summer far more pleasant.
