Carnanelly West Top

The walk up Carnanelly West Top isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to get the legs working properly. You're looking at maybe forty minutes from the car park if you're not dawdling, and the Sperrin Mountains reward that bit of effort with views across Mid Ulster that stretch for miles on a clear day.

It's a proper hiker's hill rather than a casual stroll - the terrain is rough grassland with the odd boggy patch that'll catch you out if you're not watching your feet. The summit sits at around 600 metres, which doesn't sound dramatic until you're up there and realise how exposed it feels. Walkers will absolutely get their money's worth here, though families with young kids might find it a bit of a slog without much reward at the top beyond the view itself.

Cookstown is the nearest town, only a few miles away, which makes this a sensible half-day outing if you're based in the area. If you're staying at Sperrinview Glamping, you could knock this out before breakfast and still have the afternoon free. The best light for photographs comes late afternoon in summer, when the whole landscape glows.

There's no visitor infrastructure up here - no café, no facilities - so pack water and something to eat if you want to sit and take in the view properly. Free to visit, naturally. On a windswept day it's not the most comfortable spot to linger, but pick the right weather and you'll understand why people keep coming back to these hills.
