Carn Hill

Standing at 588 metres, this rounded summit might not grab headlines like its famous Mournes neighbours, but the 360-degree views from the top are proper rewarding. The climb from Newcastle takes about an hour and a half, following well-trodden paths through Donard Forest before emerging onto open mountainside.

Walkers with decent fitness will find the ascent straightforward enough, though it's a steady pull from the car park. Families with older children who don't mind a proper hike will enjoy this one - though toddlers definitely won't make it to the top. The real payoff comes at the summit: sweeping views across the Irish Sea, down to Newcastle's golden strand, and north towards Belfast.

Best tackled on clear days when visibility stretches for miles. Weather can change quickly up here, so pack layers and waterproofs even if it looks sunny at the bottom. Allow three hours for the round trip if you're stopping to admire the views.

After a day on the hills, Newcastle's seafront pubs make for a well-earned pint. Just don't expect solitude at weekends - this peak's popularity with day-trippers from Belfast means early starts work best.
