Carn Dearg Mòr

The walk up Carn Dearg Mòr from Pitlochry is straightforward enough, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a doddle. This Perthshire peak climbs to just over 600 metres and offers proper views across the Tummel Valley once you're up there - moorland stretching out in all directions, with Ben Vrackie dominating the skyline to the east.

It's a peak that rewards hillwalkers and anyone after a half-decent afternoon outing without committing to an eight-hour slog. The path is well-trodden, the gradient manageable, and you'll likely have the summit to yourself even on weekends. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might struggle with the relentless climb, but there are decent views partway up to break the trudge. On a clear day it's worth every step; on a misty one, you're basically walking blind through heather for an hour.

Pitlochry itself is only a short drive away, so you can easily combine it with exploring the town's shops and restaurants afterwards.
