Carn All na Beinne

The walk up Carn All na Beinne from Ballater is properly steep, but that's rather the point. You're climbing into proper Highland terrain here - the sort of place where the wind picks up and suddenly you understand why people build bothies. The summit sits at 739 metres and offers views across Deeside that make the slog worthwhile, especially on a clear day when you can see all the way to distant peaks. The approach isn't complicated, though it's boggy in places and the final push to the top demands respect for the weather. Most people allow three to four hours return, depending on fitness and how long you fancy sitting about at the top with a flask.

This is one for serious walkers rather than casual strollers. Kids with good legs and decent stamina will manage it, but there's nothing playful about it - no café, no shelter, just rock and heather and wind. If you're staying at Braemar Caravan Park, it's only about six miles away, making it a proper day's outing without the drive.

The appeal is straightforward: solitude and effort combined. You won't stumble into crowds here, and the reward is genuine Highland emptiness. Go when the weather's stable - spring through early autumn works best. Winter up here can turn nasty quickly. Allow plenty of daylight and bring proper waterproofs.
