Carlton Towers

The Victorian Gothic revival looming up from the flat Yorkshire countryside between Goole and Selby catches you off guard - all turrets and dramatic stonework against dead-straight fields. Carlton Towers is the real deal, a proper stately home that takes you back to 1873 when the owners got serious about making their statement in brick and stone.

Inside, the rooms are genuinely theatrical. Soaring ceilings, ornate plasterwork, and the kind of furniture that makes you walk differently so as not to knock anything over. The drawing room alone justifies the visit if you're into Victorian excess done well. Families with kids over eight will get more from it than younger ones - there's a lot of standing about reading plaques, and the sheer grandeur can feel a bit formal.

It's open seasonally rather than year-round, so check ahead before driving over from Goole (about fifteen minutes away). Allow a solid two hours if you're doing the full tour, less if you're just having a quick look round the ground floor. Free to wander the grounds, but the house itself has an entry fee.

Stop here if you're based at Apple Blossom Caravan and Camping or Between Rivers - both are within easy striking distance. Pairs it nicely with a walk along the riverbanks nearby, which are far more rewarding than you'd expect from maps. Not a day-long destination, but absolutely worth the detour if you're already in the area.
