Cardigan Island

The walk out to Cardigan Island is short but it rewards you with proper coastal views and the chance to spot seals and seabirds without needing to be a serious hiker. You're looking at a peak that commands the mouth of the Teifi estuary, just off the coast near Cardigan town. It's accessible on foot when the tide allows, though conditions can be boggy and the final approach is steep enough to catch you out if you're not paying attention.

This spot works best for couples and families with older kids who don't mind a bit of scrambling. Younger children might find the walk tedious for what amounts to a rocky viewpoint, and you'll want sturdy boots regardless. The real draw is the wildlife - grey seals haul out on the rocks below, and if you're lucky with timing and weather, you'll see them clearly from the top. Birdwatchers come for the gulls, cormorants and razorbills.

Allow a couple of hours for the full outing including time to hang about at the summit. Check tide times before you go, as the lower sections flood. It's free, obviously - just park up near Cardigan and head out. The nearest camping options are Gwbert Glamping and Nantycroy campsite, both within a mile or so, which puts you well-placed for exploring this stretch of Cardigan Bay without much faffing about. Worth the walk, though don't expect jaw-dropping views - it's understated rather than spectacular.
