Caravan pond

The water at Caravan Pond sits flat and dark, ringed by reeds that whisper in the wind. It's a proper working nature reserve on the outskirts of Hull - the sort of place where you come to watch birds rather than be watched by crowds. The pond itself is the draw: a magnet for wildfowl, waders, and the occasional rarer visitor if you're lucky with timing. Bring binoculars. Seriously.

This is very much for the twitchers and patient naturalists. Families with young children might find it a bit slow - there's no café, no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of. But if you've got teenagers keen on wildlife photography or you're the type to stand perfectly still for twenty minutes waiting for a kingfisher, you'll find your people here. The paths are straightforward enough, nothing demanding.

It works brilliantly as a morning stop if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Cowden is closest, just under three miles away, or Sea View Country Park if you want slightly more facilities. Most visits take an hour or two depending on how serious you get with the birdwatching. Spring and autumn are your best bets for migration season, when the reserve really comes alive.

Free to access, and that's part of its charm. No tourist infrastructure, no entrance fees, just you, the water, and whatever's flying overhead on the day. It's the kind of place that rewards patience rather than spectacle.
