Car Park

The name's a bit of a letdown, I'll admit. Car Park nature reserve sits in the Highland hills near Inverness, and you'd be forgiven for expecting nothing much from the title alone. But that's precisely why it works - no Instagram crowds, just proper woodland and moorland that actually feels wild.

What you get here is a genuine slice of Scottish countryside without the fanfare. Walking trails wind through mixed forest and open heath, depending on season and mood. Spring brings wildflowers; autumn turns the whole place amber and gold. The reserve itself is small enough to cover in two hours, but the views across toward the Moray Firth lift it beyond a quick stroll.

It's ideal for families who've had enough of visitor centres and gift shops. Kids can genuinely explore without being herded along a defined path, though you'll want to keep them close on the moor edges. Serious walkers might find it a bit compact, but as a warm-up or cool-down walk during a wider Highland tour, it's spot on.

Free entry, as far as I can tell - no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Best visited autumn through spring when the light's properly dramatic and the midges have buggered off.

If you're staying at Fortrose Bay Campsite or Dingwall's site, you're only twenty minutes away. Makes for a cracking morning before heading into Inverness proper or pushing further north. Worth the detour if you're in the area, though don't shift your whole itinerary around it.
