Capplebarrow

Capplebarrow is a modest fell in Cumbria that rewards walkers with proper views across the Lake District without the crowds you'd find on the bigger peaks. It's not a dramatic summit - more of a steady climb through bracken and moorland - but the aspect west towards the main lakes makes it well worth half a morning of your time.

You'll get the most out of this if you're a keen walker who doesn't mind a bit of rough ground underfoot. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the ascent tedious since there's no proper path for stretches. The fell works brilliantly as a warm-up if you're staying in the Lake District proper, or a decent walk if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites like Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site just 4.8 miles off.

The route's unmarked in places, so bring a map or download the route beforehand - mobile signal is patchy up here. Allow two to three hours return, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. There's no facilities on the fell itself, so bring water and something to eat. Start early to beat the afternoon clouds that can roll in quickly.
