Capel y Rhug

The church sits alone on a hillside above Ruthin, and the first thing you notice is how quiet it gets the moment you walk through the gate. Capel y Rhug is a small, grey-stone nonconformist chapel dating back to 1637 - older than you'd expect from its modest size, and proof that dissenting congregations weren't messing about when it came to establishing their faith outside the established church.

Inside, it's all dark wood and simplicity. High-backed pews, a pulpit that dominates the space, lime-rendered walls. There's a genuine sense of stepping back in time, and unlike some restored chapels, this one hasn't been over-polished into sterility. It feels lived-in, even though services here are sparse these days.

This appeals most to history types and walkers rather than families with young kids - there's not much to do once you've had a look around, and the hillside setting means it's best reached on foot. Allow half an hour unless you're particularly keen on chapel architecture and want to sit quietly for a bit.

It's worth combining with a stay at Clwydian Glamping Pods just down the road - proper countryside this, rolling hills and old farming country - and you can work off breakfast with the walk up. Go on a clear morning if you can. The view across the Vale of Clwyd from the chapel makes the climb worthwhile.
