Camps Reservoir

The water here is dark and still, reflecting the moorland that slopes down to its edges. Camps Reservoir sits in the rolling hills south of Biggar, a proper working reservoir that doesn't try to be anything other than what it is - a substantial body of water surrounded by open country.

It's good walking territory. The perimeter track is well-trodden and flat enough that you don't need to be a fell walker to manage it, though the exposed positions mean wind can catch you off guard. Allow two to three hours for a circuit if you're not rushing. The landscape is bleak in the best way - moorland and rough grass with distant views back towards Lanarkshire. On a clear day you can see quite far.

Who'll enjoy it most? People who like their outdoor spaces without the crowd factor, and walkers wanting a straightforward route with little elevation gain. The reservoir itself won't thrill those after dramatic views - it's more about the quietness and space than spectacle. Children will manage the walk fine, though there's nothing here to occupy them once you've completed the circuit.

As a base, Mount View Caravan Park sits only 4.5 miles away and is well-rated, making it sensible if you're touring the South Lanarkshire area. The reservoir pairs decently with walking explorations of the broader Lowlands landscape, though it's not a must-do destination in itself. It's the sort of place you visit because you're in the area already, and you'll be glad you did.
