Camp at High Northgate

The Roman fort at High Northgate sits on the outskirts of Bishop Auckland, a largely unremarkable patch of ground unless you know what you're looking at. This was a proper military installation - a camp that once housed soldiers guarding the approaches to Hadrian's Wall, though it's inland enough that you won't see the wall itself from here.

What's on the ground now is mostly earthworks. You'll spot the remains of defensive ditches and ramparts if you're paying attention, but this isn't Hadrian's Wall with its dramatic stone. It's subtle archaeology - the kind that requires a bit of imagination to bring to life. History types who enjoy reconstructing what stood where will find something to occupy them for twenty minutes or so. Family groups with restless kids? Less likely to hold their attention for long.

There's no visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of - no café, no museum, no guided tours. It's free and you can walk around it at your own pace, which is either liberating or underwhelming depending on your mood. Spring and early summer are best when the grass is manageable and you can actually trace the layout without getting soaked.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks like White House & Hagg Bridge or Westgate - both within easy reach - it's worth a quick detour while you're exploring the Durham countryside. Couple it with a proper visit to Bishop Auckland itself, or head further afield to Hadrian's Wall proper if Roman history is your thing. Don't expect spectacle, but do expect solitude.
