Calver Peak

At 320 metres, this limestone outcrop won't have you gasping for breath, but the views across the Derwent Valley more than justify the gentle climb. The peak sits just north of Calver village, offering a proper slice of Peak District walking without the crowds that swarm Kinder Scout or Bleaklow.

Families with older children will find this an ideal introduction to fell walking - steep enough to feel like an achievement, manageable enough to avoid tears. The path winds through typical White Peak scenery: dry stone walls, sheep pastures, and patches of ancient woodland that explode with bluebells come spring.

From the summit, Chatsworth House's parkland spreads out below like a green carpet, while Bakewell's rooftops peek through the valley haze. On clear days, you can trace the river's meandering course all the way to Matlock.

Allow two hours for the round trip, though lingering types might stretch it to three with a proper picnic stop. Early morning visits reward you with the best light and fewer dog walkers.

Staying at one of the nearby sites like Chatsworth Park or Dale Farm puts you within easy striking distance. It's the sort of walk that sets you up nicely for a hearty pub lunch in Bakewell afterwards - assuming you can resist the famous puddings until then.
