Calshot Airfield

Two concrete runways stretch across this windswept Hampshire spit, remnants of what was once one of Britain's most important flying boat stations. Calshot Airfield operated from 1913 to 1961, serving as a test base for the RAF's experimental aircraft and home to the famous Schneider Trophy seaplane races in the 1920s and 30s.

Today you can walk freely across the old runways and taxiways, with interpretation boards dotted about explaining the site's aviation heritage. The control tower still stands, though access inside varies. Aircraft enthusiasts will appreciate the historical significance - this is where the Supermarine S6B that inspired the Spitfire design was tested.

Families might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're proper plane-mad. There's not a huge amount to see beyond the concrete and some informational signage, but the location right on the Solent shore makes for a decent walk with Southampton Water views. Kids can run about safely on the flat surfaces.

The site sits at the end of Calshot Spit, about ten minutes from Southampton, making it an easy addition to a New Forest holiday. Several caravan parks are within striking distance, including Solent Breezes Holiday Park and Lepe Beach Campsite nearby. Allow an hour unless you're really into aviation history, in which case you could easily spend half a day soaking up the atmosphere where flying legends once roared overhead.
