Calshot Indoor Ski Slope

Snow on the Solent might sound daft, but this artificial slope has been teaching beginners and keeping seasoned skiers sharp for decades. Built inside a converted hangar at what was once RAF Calshot, the centre offers proper skiing lessons on a year-round indoor slope that's surprisingly decent for practice runs.

Families with kids keen to try skiing will find this spot particularly useful - it's far less intimidating than hurtling down an Alpine mountain, and instructors here know how to handle nervous beginners. The slope isn't massive, so don't expect epic downhill runs, but it's perfectly adequate for learning the basics or brushing up technique before a proper ski holiday.

What makes Calshot properly convenient is its location near Southampton, just a short drive from several holiday parks along this stretch of Hampshire coast. After a morning on the slopes, you're minutes from the actual coastline at places like Lepe Beach. The combination works well - artificial snow in the morning, real sand in the afternoon.

Budget at least two hours for a lesson if you're starting from scratch, though experienced skiers might find the slope a bit limiting after an hour or so. It's not exactly cheap skiing, but then again, you won't find many other places to practice your parallel turns within spitting distance of the New Forest.
