Caisteal Suidhe Cheannaidh, Dun

The ruins of this Iron Age fort sit on a rocky outcrop above Loch Awe, commanding views across the water towards Ben Cruachan. It's genuinely atmospheric - the kind of place where you can almost hear the clatter of ancient life, though there's precious little left to see beyond the ramparts themselves.

This is proper archaeology rather than a polished visitor experience. You won't find interpretation boards or café facilities; what you get is a steep scramble up hillside to stand where someone built defences two thousand years ago. The stone walls are tumbled and overgrown, but the position tells you everything about why it mattered - control of the loch, views for miles. If you're the sort who enjoys piecing together the landscape from fragments, you'll find it rewarding.

Families with young children might find the walk tedious without the payoff of a reconstructed roundhouse or museum. Walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will get far more from it. Allow an hour including the hike up from Taynuilt, though keen types could spend longer picking through the stone.

The real value here is combining it with a wider circuit around Loch Awe - the loch itself is stunning, and Loch Awe Holiday Park sits just 3.4 miles away if you're basing yourself nearby. Visit outside midges season (roughly May to September) and you'll have a proper peaceful afternoon. It's not a day's entertainment on its own, but as part of exploring Argyll's archaeology and landscape, it's well worth the detour.
