The castle sits right where the Solway Firth starts to widen, all red sandstone and proper medieval menace. Caerlaverock is a working fortress-turned-stately-home, which means you're not just staring at ruins through a fence - you can actually walk the grounds and get a proper sense of what defending the Scottish borders actually meant.

The distinctive triangular layout is unusual for castles, which immediately tells you this wasn't built to follow convention. Inside, the rooms feel lived-in rather than museum-sterile, which does make the whole experience less atmospheric than, say, Threave, but more human somehow. The views across the marshland toward the Solway are genuinely fine, especially on a clear afternoon when you can almost see England.

This is fundamentally a spot for people interested in Scottish fortifications and medieval military architecture. Kids under ten will manage maybe an hour before the "are we done yet" starts. Bring good boots - the ground turns to bog after rain, and nobody wants to explain muddy footprints to a caravan rental company.

Dumfries is only six miles north if you need supplies or stronger coffee. The nearby Caerlaverock Castle Corner Camp Site is practically on the estate's doorstep, making this ideal if you're doing the Dumfries & Galloway park circuit. Combine it with Threave Castle or the Mabie Forest paths for a proper day out. Worth a couple of hours, not worth a journey on its own.
