Bankend Hill

The walk up Bankend Hill from Dumfries takes you straight into proper Lowland countryside - rolling fields, decent views, and none of the tourist crush you get elsewhere. It's a modest hill by Scottish standards, but that's rather the point. You get a genuine sense of achievement without needing crampons or a mountain rescue service on speed dial.

The ascent is straightforward enough, though the path can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter. The real reward sits at the top: you're looking out across the Solway Firth towards the Lake District fells, and on a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort. Takes most people an hour or so to reach the summit, depending on fitness.

Walkers will find this properly satisfying - it's the kind of hill that feels like a proper accomplishment without being mountaineering. Families with older kids would manage it fine; younger ones might grumble about the climb. History types won't find much up there, but the landscape tells its own story about the borderlands.

Do it on a dry day, and bring waterproofs anyway because the Scottish weather is a law unto itself. From nearby Dumfries, you're within striking distance of several caravan sites including Criffel View and Marthrown of Mabie, making this an excellent morning's work as part of a broader park holiday in the region. Go early to avoid whatever passes for crowds locally.
