Caerlaverock Castle

The approach to Caerlaverock is what does it for me - you're driving through proper flat farmland south of Dumfries when suddenly this red sandstone fortress appears, surrounded by a working moat that actually has water in it. Not many castles can say that. It's a triangle of a building, which sounds odd until you see it and realise how imposing that geometry becomes.

This is a castle for walking around rather than exploring for hours. You'll get good views from outside the walls without paying to go in, though if you're keen on medieval military architecture the gatehouse and courtyard are worth the admission. Kids tend to enjoy the moat and ramparts more than the interior - there's a genuine sense of fortress about the place that appeals to that age group, though I wouldn't bank on more than ninety minutes here unless you're proper into 13th-century Scottish defences.

The site sits right next to Caerlaverock Castle Corner Camp Site, which is handy if you're making this a base for exploring the Solway coast. Dumfries Riverside Holiday Park is only nine miles north and gets decent reviews if you want something with more facilities. Summer's your best bet weatherwise, though honestly the emptiness in winter adds to the atmosphere.

Worth the detour south from Dumfries? Yes, if you're combining it with coastal walks or visiting nearby attractions. As a standalone trip, it's a quick stop rather than a full day out.
