Caergwrle Castle

The walk up Caergwrle Castle catches you off guard with how steep it actually is. You're scrambling through thick woodland from the car park, grabbing tree roots and the odd sturdy branch to haul yourself higher, and then suddenly you're among the ruins themselves - a proper medieval stronghold perched on a hilltop that commands views across the Dee Valley and back towards Chester.

What remains is honest rather than impressive: crumbling stone walls, the ghost of what was once a significant castle in Flintshire's strategic landscape. The views are the real draw here, not the ruins themselves. On a clear day you can see for miles. It's the kind of spot where you understand why someone bothered building a fortress in the first place.

This is walkers' territory, honestly. Families might manage it, but the climb is proper knackering and the ruins won't hold a young child's attention for long - maybe forty minutes total if you're being generous. Historians and anyone keen on a decent bit of scrambling through woodland will get far more out of it. The nearest proper facilities are back in Chester, about fifteen minutes' drive south.
