Cad West

The walk up to Cad West takes about forty minutes if you're moderately fit, and the effort pays off with a proper panoramic sweep across the Mawddach estuary and towards Snowdonia. It's a viewpoint rather than a destination with facilities - no café, no visitor centre, just you and the landscape. The path itself is reasonably well-trodden, though it can get boggy after rain, so decent boots matter.

This is the sort of place that appeals most to walkers who are already exploring the hills around Dolgellau. You're not coming here alone; it's a natural loop addition if you're based at one of the nearby campsites like Llwyn yr Helm or Torrent Walk. From Cad West, the views fold out eastward - dense green valleys, the river snaking below, and on a clear day the Cadair Idris ridge dominant to the south. On a cloudy afternoon, you'll see twenty metres into murk and wonder why you bothered.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip from Dolgellau, including a sit-down at the top. It's free, obviously - it's a hillside. Families with younger children might find the climb tedious without the reward of a destination building or playground at the summit, though older kids who like a proper walk will get something out of it. The real value is as part of a wider day in the hills rather than a standalone visit. Go in settled weather, bring a map, and don't expect crowds.
