Bystock Wood

You'll find yourself in proper woodland the moment you step into Bystock Wood, just outside Exeter. It's the sort of place where the path narrows, the light filters through the canopy, and you remember why people actually walk in forests rather than round car parks.

The wood itself is manageable - mixed deciduous trees, decent footpaths, and enough space to lose the crowds without losing your way. Local dog walkers seem to have claimed it, which tells you it's the real deal rather than some landscaped nature reserve. There's a good sense of actual woodland ecology here: fallen logs, understory growth, the works. Allow an hour or so if you're just stretching your legs, longer if you're the type to stop and listen to birds.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not dramatic scenery - no viewpoints or clifftop moments - but it's reliable, accessible, and genuinely pleasant. Families with younger kids might find an hour's wandering enough before someone kicks up about being tired. The paths aren't technical, though they can be muddy after rain, which is perfectly fine by this writer.

It works well as a half-day add-on if you're staying at Devon Cliffs or Ladram Bay. Close enough to Exeter to pop to after a beach day, but far enough away to feel like proper countryside. Admission appears free, and there's no faffing about with timed slots or booking. Just turn up, walk, leave.
