Byers' Gill Wood

A proper woodland walk in County Durham that doesn't pretend to be anything grander than it is. Byers' Gill Wood offers the kind of peaceful forest ramble you can knock out in an afternoon without needing special training or a packed lunch for three days.

The wood itself is gently wooded with decent paths through - nothing dramatic, but pleasant enough with mature trees overhead and the sort of quiet you actually can't find near Stockton-on-Tees. It's the kind of place where you'll hear birdsong and maybe someone else's footsteps, but not much else. Good for families who want their kids to burn off energy without the hassle of a big mountain hike. Walkers will find it manageable and straightforward; history enthusiasts might find it less rewarding unless you're into reading the landscape itself.

Allow an hour or two depending on how many side paths you potter down. It's free to access as far as I can tell, and you can visit year-round, though autumn when the trees are turning is when it actually stands out. Winter's muddy enough to be annoying without being dramatic.

If you're staying at Donnewell Farm Caravan and Motorhome Club or Eden Grange Glamping nearby, it's worth a morning visit between bigger activities. Not a destination in itself, but a solid filler for a Durham holiday when you want to get out of the caravan and stretch your legs properly.
