About Bye Street Gate

Standing in the heart of Hereford, this medieval gatehouse is all that remains of what was once the entrance to the Bishop's Palace. The sturdy stone archway, dating from the 14th century, gives you a proper sense of the defensive architecture that once protected the church's powerful residents.

History buffs will appreciate the Gothic stonework and the way it frames views through to the cathedral beyond. It's not a major attraction in its own right - you can see everything worth seeing in about ten minutes. But it's a lovely bit of context if you're already exploring Hereford Cathedral and the surrounding streets.

Families might find it a bit underwhelming unless the kids are particularly keen on castle-type structures. The gate stands right on a busy street, so there's no peaceful contemplation to be had here.

Best combined with a proper wander around Hereford's other medieval bits - the cathedral, the Old House, and what's left of the city walls. It's free to view from the street, though I'm not sure if you can actually walk through the archway itself. If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Lucksall or Ridge Hill, it makes for a quick stop during a day trip into the city rather than a destination in itself.
