Busky Hill

The walk up Busky Hill isn't much of a secret round Barnoldswick, but that doesn't make it any less worth doing. You're looking at a proper moorland peak that rewards you with views across the Pennines - nothing dramatic, nothing that'll make you gasp, but solid Lancashire fell country all the same.

It's the kind of walk that works best on a clear day, which admittedly doesn't happen often enough round here. On a good one, you can pick out the industrial heritage of the textile mills below and the sweep of moorland stretching away. The ascent itself is straightforward enough - nothing technical, no scrambling. Plan on an hour there and back if you're not dawdling, less if you're quick.

Families with decent walkers will manage it fine. Kids who need constant entertainment might find it a bit sparse, though the moorland has a certain wild appeal that beats manicured parks. Serious hillwalkers would find it gentle, really - a nice warm-up rather than a challenge.

If you're based at one of the local campsites - Deerstone Glamping or Draughton Heights are closest at a few miles out - it makes for a straightforward morning outing before heading to the pub in Barnoldswick for lunch. Free to access, no facilities up top, so bring water. The real value here is fitness rather than spectacle, but sometimes that's exactly what a fell walk should be.
