Bushie Law

The walk up Bushie Law takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and it rewards you with views across the Moffat valley that justify every step. The peak itself isn't dramatic - it's a proper hill rather than a mountain, 719 metres high, with a trig point at the top and the kind of wide-open vistas you get throughout this part of the Scottish Lowlands.

From Moffat, it's straightforward to access. The path starts gentle enough but gets steeper as you climb, so it's not one for very young children or anyone avoiding uphill work. Fit families or keen walkers will find it manageable, though. The terrain is moorland and grassland, and on a clear day you can see right across towards the Lake District if you're lucky. On a grey day, which is half the time round here, it's still atmospheric - just less Instagram-friendly.

You should allow a couple of hours for the round trip, maybe longer if you're taking photos or stopping to catch your breath. It's free to walk, obviously, with no facilities at the top or halfway point. Bring water and something to eat if you're making a day of it.
