Bury Hill House (site of)

There's not much to see at Bury Hill House these days - just earthworks and a vague sense of where something important once stood. It's an archaeological site near Westcott, and what makes it worth knowing about is the Iron Age fort that occupied this spot, complete with defensive ramparts that locals and historians still argue over. You can walk the grounds and trace the outlines if you're into that sort of thing, though you'll need a decent map and a bit of imagination.

This is really for the archaeology crowd or serious walkers exploring the Surrey landscape. Casual visitors expecting ruins or signage will be disappointed. The site itself won't eat up more than an hour unless you're doing a proper historical deep-dive. What it does offer is a genuine sense of place - standing where Romano-British settlers once fortified themselves against invasion - and it's the sort of stop that makes sense if you're already out rambling in the area.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Henfold Lakes is close by, or The Green Escape's glamping setup if you want something more upmarket - Bury Hill House works as a morning walk before a proper lunch in Westcott itself. Don't make a special trip. But if you're combining it with other local explorations, the earthworks reward a bit of attention. Free access, no facilities, and best visited when the ground isn't waterlogged.
