Burway Hill

Standing at 516 metres, this summit offers some of the finest views across the Shropshire Hills without the crowds that swarm the Long Mynd's main peaks. The climb from Church Stretton is a proper workout - about an hour and a half of steady ascent through heathland and bracken that'll leave your calves burning.

From the top, the panorama stretches right across to the Welsh borders on a clear day. You'll spot the distinctive ridge of the Stiperstones to the west and the rolling Clun Hills beyond. It's particularly spectacular in autumn when the bracken turns rust-coloured and the light catches the valleys just so.

Walkers with decent fitness will love this one, though families with young children might find the going a bit tough. The path can get boggy after rain, so proper boots are essential. Allow three to four hours for the round trip from Church Stretton.

The hill works brilliantly as a day trip from any of the nearby campsites like Small Batch or Mountain Edge Shropshire. After a morning's hike, Church Stretton's cafes make for a well-earned lunch stop. Fair warning though - there's no mobile signal up there, so don't rely on your phone for navigation. Stick to the marked paths and you'll be fine.
