Burnham Beeches

Ancient beech trees with gnarled trunks older than most English villages spread across 600 acres of woodland just outside Beaconsfield. Burnham Beeches is the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a tick-box visit - the trees themselves are the main attraction, some dating back four centuries, their sprawling branches creating cathedral-like glades that shift with the seasons.

You're free to explore on foot along well-marked trails that wind through woodland and across open heath. Most people allow two to three hours, though you could easily spend half a day here if you're the type to sit on a bench and just watch the light filter through leaves. It's not dramatic or sudden - more of a slow accumulation of quiet beauty that builds as you go deeper in.

Walkers will get the most from this. The terrain is gentle enough for families with young children, though there are muddier sections after rain that'll test patience with pushchairs. History enthusiasts will find the veteran trees genuinely moving - these beeches have stood through centuries while estates crumbled around them. The autumn colours are particularly strong, though spring brings something equally special when the woodland floor greens up.

Free access, naturally. There's car parking at the main entrance. If you're camped at Amerden or Penn Meadow Farm nearby, it's an easy morning or afternoon sortie. The site can feel busy on weekends, so weekday visits tend to be more meditative.
