Burlington Baptist Church

A modest red-brick chapel just east of Ipswich, Burlington Baptist Church is the sort of building you might drive past without noticing - which would be a shame. The structure dates back to the 19th century and carries the understated dignity that characterises many independent chapels across East Anglia. Inside, it's all high ceilings, clear glass windows flooding the space with light, and the kind of peaceful quiet that makes you drop your voice without thinking.

This isn't a destination you'll spend hours at. Twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you're genuinely interested in Victorian nonconformist architecture. But if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Priory Park or The Lost Garden Retreat are both excellent - it makes a decent quiet break from family activities. Older kids interested in local history will find it worth a look; younger ones will probably find it dull beyond five minutes.

Visit on a weekday morning if you can, when it's most likely to be open and least likely to have services on. Admission appears to be free, though it's worth checking ahead on opening hours as smaller churches can be unpredictable. The setting is pleasant enough, surrounded by trees and utterly traffic-free. It's the sort of place that reminds you Suffolk still has pockets of proper countryside, even this close to Ipswich. Not a must-do, but solid value if you're passing.
